Birmingham canals Farmers Bridge Locks(#0277)

Birmingham canals Farmers Bridge Locks(#0277)
History of life on the canal, including surviving hard freezes and navigating changing fortunes of canal companies that made life increasingly difficult. While traveling on the canals now looks like an idyllic way to escape the hustle of the modern system, the canal was once the inescapable modern system that wore workers down.

From what I've read it was the competition from the railroads that clobbered the canals; on this side of the pond as well. (In the eastern US, that is; canals were already passe by the time infrastructure was being built in the West, altho there were some efforts using steamboats on natural water bodies.)

I'm in Portland as I'm writing this and spent the past few days along the Columbia (pictures in a couple of weeks). They built all those dams with locks, but it sure seems that most of what moves, moves by rail.
