Astoria Column (#1278)

One of the panels characterizing white mans 'settling' of the northwest. Given the weather of the area, I suspect that the indigenous populations were not so scantily clad as shown here. It's likely that the lack of clothing is used to reinforce a notion of the indigenous as 'uncivilized.'
