Holtville historic direction post (#0764)

Holtville historic direction post (#0764)
See discussion with adjacent photo (#0765). Note that Alamorio and Wiest are unincorporated communities that are not on contemporary road signs, though they were once large enough to have post offices. Per Wikipedia, the post office in Alamorio closed in 1917 and the post office in Wiest closed in 1933.

I didn't place this in any of the street light groups since it originally was in the middle of the street and the only purpose of the light on top was to keep people from hitting it. Such fixtures were not used to provide illumination for pedestrians or vehicles.

I read this as "Hotville" at first. Hotville isn't a place I'd want to visit.

This is a nifty sign, though. I've never seen one quite like this.

I seem to recall seeing them in street scenes in movies from the 30's. In terms of the street scenery, Holtville was surprisingly more like a fairly cozy plains farm town than is typical for desert farm towns. The latter tend to look too much like rundown strip malls.
