For some reason I had always assumed that on these older buildings with metal sidings, the metal was an integral part of the building structure. It wasn't till walking close to this that I realized the metal is a very simple and thin facing.

I've only rarely seen that kind of siding, and not for a long time. I wonder if the increased moisture in the East made it more likely to corrode.

I don't recall much of it in the East either. Besides corrosion, it probably also traps moisture and increases rot in the supporting beams.
