It took me many years to learn to appreciate the subtle beauty in this very dry landscape. Now that I'm accustomed to the shades of the west, the dense greenness of the eastern U.S.now often feels a little too much "in your face".

I suspect had I gone out West to live at some point earlier in my life, maybe in my 20s, I'd feel the same. I've spent the last 10 or 15 years adjusting my feelings of "home" and what that means to me, though, so that now I think I'd miss trees too much to go very far.

slgwv does make a compelling argument about the geology, though. As much as I wish we weren't doing what I think we're doing to the climate, I do wish I could go forward about two or three centuries and see what a more arid version of the Appalachians or the Kentucky limestone country might look like.

I know exactly what you mean, Don, though I miss GREEN a lot. But, I especially miss the ocean. Like you, it's taken me years to get used to barrenness and to see the beauty in it. It's definitely lonelier, like being stranded on Mars.

I've lived almost all of my life in places where there was easy physical access to views of the ocean,where you could sort of sense the both the ocean's and international shipping's presence in the culture. I basically need to live on the "edge" of the culture where the opportunity to escape is always there as is the opportunity that something new and strange is coming in. One of my greatest concerns when moving to the desert was about access to the ocean, but it's worked out, probably because in many ways we're just a distant exurb of LA and also heavily influenced by coastal Mexico.

Luckily the truck was there to give both a sense of scale and history.
