Palm Springs El Nino Jan1x (#0311)

Palm Springs El Nino Jan1x (#0311)
This is looking southwest towards the mountains around South Palm Canyon, taken from Demuth Park across Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs.

Mimicking the Weather Channel (and expecting to quickly get tired of El Nino storms), I decided to name the storms – "El Nino Jan1x" indicates the first series of El Nino storms in January.

The less mimicry I can manage of the Weather Channel of Everlasting Panic, the better.

Will tomorrow's storm be El Nino Jan2x, or El Nino Jan1y?

EP (everlasting panic), that's a good description...

Now you're making me get scientific! As originally conceived, the counts are for the clusters (1 is the first series of 3 days of rain which has ended in the desert). The 'x' is just a marker to indicate that the preceding number isn't a date. What I had to think through is where to count clusters. Our forecast is for very little rain in the desert for the next several days, but snow in the mountains is of equal concern since it washes (literal pun) down on us, so I have to define my clusters by snow in the mountain and thus will define clusters by clusters of snow storms in Idyllwild -- for them, Jan1x lasts through a snow storm Saturday.

Think that reasoning is worth a publication in MIMNN (Minutes of the Institute of Meteorological Non-Naysayers)?

Wow, the light is fantastic in these shots. It really showcases the sky. El Nino in SE Oregon consists of snowrainsnowsnowrainpartlycloudysnow.

Thanks -- the confluence of dry desert, mountains, and Pacific-influenced weather makes for frequent dramatic views/skies.
