Malheur NWR, OR BLM (0992a)
Updated 1/4/2016: A public lands dispute in the Burns, Oregon area has resulted in a private militia takeover of a BLM building at Malheur and the BLM has currently shut the offices in the area.

At the headquarters for the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge headquarter buildings plus many of the dams, canals, and roads of the refuge were built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) between 1936 and 1942.

I've never been anywhere near there, though the slow burn of current events makes me want to go.

It's a part of Oregon I very much enjoy, both remote and 'homey' feeling at the same time, so I expect I'll go back. Important in this, for my perception of rural Oregon, is that the locals are not comfortable with the agitators.

A valuable reminder in HuffPost today -- that the land doesn't belong to the white settlers who are demanding it "back", that it was part of the Malheur Indian Reservation that the feds closed in the 1800's, forcing the tribes to move further away. So, it anyone deserves the land 'back', its the Indians.

Last night (1/26/2016) seven of those occupying the reserve were stopped at a road block and arrested, a seven died at the seen of the road block. Today at a news conference the local sheriff made an excellent, emotional, appeal to the remaining militia to stop the confrontation.
