I recently watched the HBO series on the Roosevelts. It was quite good with interesting analysis, but they sort of elided through the rather abrupt transition from the depression-era to war-time FDR. One did get the sense, though, that he wasn't so much a progressive (that was Eleanor), but engaged in 'realpolitik' and the progressiveness of the New Deal was mainly a recognition that something like that was the best solution.

Interesting--we've been watching the Roosevelts too, but haven't gotten to that point! I find it particularly curious (and reprehensible) because he didn't need the political cover--he'd just been re-elected the previous year. It wasn't as tho it was a cynical election-year ploy.
