Montgomery Pass casinos, NV (0090)

Montgomery Pass casinos, NV (0090)
Montgomery Pass, NV, a former casino center just east of the California border. Per a man stopped at the area who had lived there years ago, this was once a very active casino area but had died out as the Indian casino opened in Bishop.

Now that is interesting! At one point all the main highways into Nevada had a casino right at the state line, and some of those places have grown into actual towns (Primm, Jackpot). You hear how the Indian casinos have drawn away traffic from Nevada, but this is a stark example.

Apparently that portion of the state doesn't work quite right for these things. The plans to build a big casino in Beatty seem to have been put on hold, and the casino in the Amargosa Valley always seems to be struggling.

Longstreet's? We stayed there a number of years ago. It was a nice little oasis, but you got the feeling they were in cost-cutting mode (e.g., the restaurant not open for breakfast, as I recall). I've got an album on it from that trip:

That's it. I've stopped there for dinner a few times and they always seem to have one person doing everything.

It's a cute place--I hope they can hang on (altho we haven't been back thru the area!) It would seem they could survive with the overflow from Death Valley, because lodging is so limited there.
