Los Angeles CicLAvia Royale Wilshire (4915)

Los Angeles CicLAvia Royale Wilshire (4915)
Royale Wilshire in the Weslake neighborhood -- I could not find any history on this building. Taken during CicLAvia, an event where 6 miles of Wilshire Blvd were closed to automobile traffic for the day. See: www.ciclavia.org

Chicago's bike community tried copying CicLAvia with several events over the last two or three years, but turnout was always light, and they couldn't secure funding. We do have one morning in May when Lake Shore Drive is shut down to car traffic, which is a lot of fun.

I'm surprised, would have thought the city that made cow sculptures famous would have had better turnout for something like this. Is it easy to bike and ride transit? That I think is a key part of making this successful. The subway runs right under Wilshire and there were quite a few bikes on the subway.

I tend to forget that Los Angeles has a subway. One of these days, I'm going to take it.

I don't think it's that difficult to ride and take your bike on CTA (the agency that manages the El and the buses inside the city limits), assuming you're doing it outside rush hour. You could quickly meet capacity with bikes, as there isn't a lot of room for them, but if these events are on a weekend I think they'd be okay. CTA coverage is fairly limited, though, and Metra (the suburban commuter service) is a lot more complicated when it come to bikes.

Similar here, the train portions of Metro are easy for bikes, but the buses are much more complicated.

Thanks for finding this info -- the pamphlet is quite interesting. $150/month seems like pretty high rents for the late 20's, but then this was considered a good area in those days.
