Indio Hills Palms Park (4730)

Indio Hills Palms Park (4730)
From a hike to palm oases in Indio Hills Palms Park, with Great Outdoors Palm Springs. The oases were much more pleasant hiking than captured here -- I was using my older 'hiking' camera, so pictures didn't come out well.

I'd like to go back that way in cooler weather and do some hiking. It looked like there'd be plenty.

The contrast between open desert and palm oases is always delightful. February/March are ideal, the short days in December/January make for relatively squeezed days and yet its not too hot midday for hiking. Often the best hiking places are far away from where you're staying and palm oases typically have a mile or two of trudging through open desert to get to them.

I find the idea of open desert hiking daunting, as you might expect for an Easterner. It's one of those things I need to just get out and do.

The 'messaging' about the desert works oddly. There's a lot of effort to keep people concerned about wandering the desert, which unfortunately has mixed effects. Like many I listened to that for years, which contributed to thinking of the desert as just something to get through and not being concerned about the state of the desert. It took some time to overcome that and think of the desert as a living organism that, when treated appropriately, was a safe place to explore. On the other hand, we regularly find evidence around here of the number of people who go charging off into the desert with no fear and end up having to be rescued. Like the 'Smokey the Bear' message, its turning out that there's a strong need to come up with some new way to teach about the desert.
