Dawson City, Yukon 537a1
I camped in Dawson City for a couple of days. Dawson City had been at its prime during the Klondike Gold Rush, had gone quite a bit downhill for many years, but when I was there in 1994 it was just beginning to revive with recent tourist interest in the north. As you can see from the nearby pictures, there were still a good many abandoned buildings but there was also some restoration and even new construction.

From 1994 San Francisco - Arctic Ocean camping trip. Scan of an older picture. Best viewed as part of the NW Canada set.

I found Dawson City a very interesting place when we were there. In the twelve years between your visit and mine, it had very much turned into a thriving little tourist town. All these buildings housed coffee shops and artists studios.

No! Sounds like its becoming another Whitehorse. There's some level of mix between 'as is' and renovated cute that seems to be still genuine, but that's not easily defined.

Whitehorse struck me as much more your typical fast-food franchise town, which Dawson City hadn't hit yet. It reminded me more of those picturesgue little boutique Rocky Mountain towns, or maybe a smaller version of Jackson, Wyoming with fewer T-shirt shops.

That's encouraging, hopefully Dawson can find the balance needed.
