Yellowhead Highway 492a1

Yellowhead Highway 492a1
Yellowhead Highway to Smithers. It was a fairly gray and chilly day in late May, but there was very little traffic and the countryside was increasingly green and lush, with mountains in the distance. I camped near Smithers and ended up talking for several hours around a campfire with a Native American who was moving from Colorado to Alaska. After Smithers I visited various provincial parks along the highway as I headed west.

From 1994 San Francisco - Arctic Ocean camping trip. Scan of an older picture. Best viewed as part of the NW Canada set.

I remember Smithers. Most of our path back to the Lower 48 was west of this path up, so that we passed through Whistler (a horrible place) and Pemberton, but we didn't divert from the Yellowhead until south of here.

I remember debating taking the more western route but deciding not to, I think partially to avoid dealing with the ski resort areas.

Whistler was probably the worst little ski town I've seen, and everything south of there was covered in a mad frenzy of Olympic construction when we were there. I think you would have like the wilderness north of Whistler along the Fraser River, though. If on some far distant date you make a similar trip, you might consider the coastal route.

Most likely will do it again some day, and I'd like to somehow also drive up Vancouver Island and ferry to Prince Rupert.
