The Cove residential area (see description in adjacent picture). There appeared to be about 30 completed homes in the area, though it looked like only 4 or 5 were occupied. All of the homes beyond this barricade are vacant.

I see you took this in 2009. Do you think the state of this neighborhood was related to the housing bubble (it seems early for that, though I know California was harder hit than other places), or was it already like this?

Yes, but also to just plain poor decision-making. It is an area north of Palm Springs that is buffeted by strong winds and thus the housing that is up there tends to degrade quickly. I would bet (cynically) that t was built on the assumption of seducing naive buyers who wanted to get a 'piece of the action,' and we know what happened to most of those properties.
