Ashton Windmill

Ashton Windmill at Chapel Allerton on the Isle of Wedmore, Somerset is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II Listed building. Built from coursed, colour washed rubble this tower mill has a revolving cap, tailfan and four sails. Dating from the
1760s the tower stands at 7.5 metres high with 60 centimetre thick walls and with sails of 13 metres across. It was used to grind corn and also beans for cattle feed.
The windmill has been renovated over the years, and for a short time in the 1890's it was powered by steam. In 1927 it ceased working and during the second World War it was repurposed as a Home Guard post.
In 1958 further renovation saw the thatched roof replaced by the boat shaped structure seen here.
Ashton Windmill is the only windmill left in Somerset with complete working machinery and opens to the public two days a week during the summer months. It is now owned by Somerset Council and managed by the Parish Council and the volunteer group ' Friends of Ashton Windmill'

Was wären solche Bauwerke ohne Freiwillige….die Lichtstimmung ist herrlich…
die Baumsilhouetten umrahmen die Mühle…der schön!

Ecobird club has replied to Tanja - Loughcrew clubThank you very much Tanja. It is nice that it is kept in good condition, albeit now missing it's cloth sails, but still with all the machinery intact. The volunteers do a go job, - even in January one of them was there taking care of the grounds
HWW and have a good week. Best wishes Carol

I like this picture very much!
It is a very unusual to see a windmill like this. Most seem to have the whole body rotate to align with the wind.
Great colours too.
Best Wishes, HWW,, and stay safe!!

While the current roof can't compete with the charm of a thatched roof, those responsible for the decision certainly had their reasons.
Have a great weekend and stay well!
