Historic Stirling

Historic Stirling
Stirling Castle, Scotland and the PiP shows the Wallace Monument Best viewed large I think, thank you.

Stirling castle dates from the early 12th century, with a lot of the important buildings within the walls added between 1490 - 1600. Built high on a crag with steep cliffs on three sides It was a very important castle both strategically and historically with many batltles fought over it. During the wars of independence it changed hands eight times over a 50 year period.

When Edward I of England invaded Scotland in 1296 he found the castle empty and claimed it. After 60 years of war the English were defeated by the Scots led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. The leaders of the English army retreated into the castle but were starved into surrender by the Scots

Recent history sees the castle as the home of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlands. Concerts have been held here inluding the one by Runrig in 2017.

The National Wallace Monument is a monument to Scottish hero William Wallace. Sited on Abbey Craig, a hilltop overlooking Stirling, it is said to be the point from which William Wallace watched the gathering of Edward I's army before the Battle of Stirling.

The link I have chosen to go with these images is by Runrig, live from Stirling Castle. Here is

Thank you very much Paulo. To be honest the castle is imposing but the Wallace monument is more impressive and I love the almost gothic design.

Thank you very much Armando. Ownership of the castle was fought over many times because of it's strategic importance and it had quite a turbulent history. Mary Queen of Scots was crowned at Stirling Castle. The Wallace Monument is more recent but the gothic architecture is quite attractive. I believe it gained a lot of renewed interest with the making of the film Braveheart.

Thank you very much Malik. I am really pleased you liked the pictures and also know so much about the history. I also find it quite fascinating. The Wallace Monument I think is stunning. When we visited it was raining quite hard so we did not go right up to the monument but it must be an amazing sight standing and looking out at the landscape where William Wallace once stood

Thank you very much Jiří It was raining when we went to get photos of the Wallace Monument so we did not go right up to it. It seems there are wonderful views to be had from up there and it is well worth a visit.

I have just been looking at your Scotland images and you have some wonderful photos. We always wanted to Upper Loch Torridon but stopped too many times for photos on the way and never made it!!!! You packed so much into your holiday and must be looking forward to showing it all to your friends.

Ecobird club has replied to Herb Riddle club
Thank you very much Herb. We weren't that close either really but fortunately the long lens picked it up ok. The same for the Wallace Monument. A shame as I would have liked a closer look but there was a sudden downpour and we decided not to risk it so went into the visitor centre for coffee and cake instead.

Thank you very much Diana. I am pleased it brought back good memories for you. Our first visit and I was hoping to go to the monument itself but the rain had other ideas so I settled for a couple of shots from below the visitors' centre, - and had coffee and cake instead. A shame though as the views are meant to be spectacular and I would have loved to see it up close.

Hugs and best wishes.

Two most imporessive photos! Especially on first sight the similarity to Edinburgh castle is quite striking, both sitting on top of these volcanic rocks! Stirling's advantage is that it's much less crowded:-)
Ecobird club has replied to Gudrun club
Thank you very much Gudrun. From the pictures I have seen I would have to agree, although for all the times we have been to Scotland we have never been to Edinburgh. It is the crowds we like to avoid!!! I think Stirling still has some parking issues though.

Un imposant château qui semble difficile à prendre vu la hauteur des remparts et un monument qui semble sortir de la forêt ! Deux captures superbes avec un descriptif intéressant ! HWW, Carol !
Ecobird club has replied to Kawasirius club
Thank you very much Henri. As you say the castle would seem to be almost impregnable given it's location and the steep cliffs, yet it has changed hands many times in it's history, particularly with the battles between Scotland and England.

We did not go into the monument as the weather was really bad but there are, I understand, wonderful views from up there. Imagine standing where William Wallace once stood watching the English soldiers preparing for battle.

A very belated HWW and have a good weekend

Hi Carol
A wonderful and interesting picture, which I like very much!
Very nice composition showing the rocky mountain on which it is built.
What I didn't know until last December was that the TV series 'Colditz' was filmed there, due to its similarity to www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/51761576 (and of course the obvious logistics of keeping it at home)
Best Wishes, HWW, a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!

Thank you very much Rosa. We unfortunately did not go right up to the monument as the heavens opened, so settled for a few shots from near the visitor centre and went for coffee and cake instead!!

I was a little late to the party myself but when we were on Skye some years ago I saw a poster and looked them up. Then Runrig did their goodbye tour and it was televised. I loved it, - the music, the energy and the Scottish songs that had the crowds going wild. Roger then bought the cd set for me. Markus and Tanja were there, lucky people!!
