Touching The Sky!

Touching The Sky!
Campbeltown Loch, Argyll, Scotland. From this close up shot the tall 'Torbay Palm' trees seem to touch the sky.

Framed between the trees you have a glimpse of Davaar Island situated at the mouth of Campbeltown Loch off the east coast of Kintyre

I have added 'Touch the Sky' performed by the Mamas

Thank you very much George. Yes people are often surprised about the palm trees. The west coast and Kintyre, of which Campbeltown is the largest town benefits from the warming effects of the Gulf Stream which brings warm tropical water to the area. The weather tends to be quite mild here. Palm trees thrive here as they do on Skye and some of the other islands. I am told that the island of Gigha is also very lush. Maybe we will get there one day

Thank you for the information Isabel. Really appreciated. I believe we call them Torbay Palms over here by what we have since read. It is always good to learn and you certainly know your stuff!! It might amuse you to know that the local paper there once had an article about the 'palm' trees that grow on the roundabout by the town clock. They said that the west side of the clock was affected by the swaying of the palm trees and was throwing the locals into a bizarre time warp whereby the clock was running three hours ahead of the UK, saying it was running on 'Dubai time', despite being only around 17 miles from Northern Ireland!!!' It said it was still wrong despite several efforts to fix it!!!

Thanks again Isabel. HBM and have a good week

Beautifully captured Carol. The first time I saw these growing in the UK was in Penzance in 1967. I thought they were so exotic! HBM

Wishing you a good new week.
Ecobird club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thank you very much Rosa. Yes they do look lovely. People are often surprised that they grow well in areas of Scotland, particularly the west coast but the weather is actually quite mild in these parts , due in part to the warm Gulf Stream.

Some years ago the local paper reported that the locals were seeing a bizarre time warp effect as the 'palm' trees by the clock were swaying and affecting the west face of the clock, and despite many attempts to repair it was still showing a time three hours ahead of the UK, putting it on 'Dubai' time when it was hardly more than 17 miles from Northern Ireland!!! So you are right - exotic they are!!!!!!!

Ecobird club has replied to FarbFormFreude club
Thank you very much. There are a number of these trees which are known here as Torbay Palms in the area. The warm Gulf Stream and mild weather here and along the west coast make it possible for them to thrive. No AI involved at all - I would not even know where to begin!!!!

Thank you very much Gudrun. These trees grow well in this part of Scotland. Over here they are known as Torbay Palms, although as both Isabel and Ramon have said they are not actually palm trees, nor are they any where near Torbay!!!

Gudrun club has replied to Ecobird club
They do look like palm tress:-) Kiwis call them cabbage trees- cordyline australis. They obviously grow well when there are no severe winter frosts.

I'm amazed that palm trees can grow in Scotland. They are beautiful.
Ecobird club has replied to Esther club
Thank you very much Esther. Although technically not palm trees they are known as Torbay Palms and they grow well in this part of Scotland whcih benenfits from the warm Gulf Stream.

They do look good though. They did have issue with the ones growing on the roundabout by the town clock. It seems that the movement of the trees affected the west face of the clock and it was showing 'Dubai' time despite all efforts to put it right!!!
