Lime Kilns (PiPs)

Lime Kilns (PiPs)
Historic Lime Kilns at Ard Neackie, Sutherland, Scotland captured from across Loch Eriboll.
Ard Neackie (or Ard Neakie depending on which site you are looking at), is a rocky promontory, almost an island, separated from the mainland by a spit of sandy beach. There is still a track leading to the quarry from here.

The Countess of Sutherland and her husband the Marquis of Stafford purchased the estate in 1829 and built the pier which served the ferry from Heilem across Loch Eriboll to Portnancon in the early 19th century , alongside the Heilem Inn. The ferry was in use until the road around the loch was completed.

The ferry house was built in 1831 and housed the ferryman. There was also a building to house the lime kiln and quarry workers and a shop.

The pub was closed in the early 1850's, having been refused a licence. There were problems with the lime kiln and quarry workers indulging in too much alcohol, which must have been dangerous in their line of work, and a sailor was stabbed outside of the pub, and it is likely this led to the licence being refused.

The lime kilns, the pier and the ferry house are listed buildings

The PiPs show wildflowers from the viewpoint and the wider view of Ard Neackie, the lime kilns are on the far left.

I have added a link by The Quarrymen called 'In Spite of All the Danger'

www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuuOAA9ekbg

it is worth a look to see images of the Quarrymen before they of course became the Beatles!

Thank you very much Christa. The viewpoint is a good place to view Ard Neackie and the surrounding area. I love this area. It is probably too far for us to go back again but I have some lovely memories

I love the contrast, Carol, between the regular form of the lime kilns and the ruggedness of the rockfaces. I have, for a while, been of a mind to photograph the lime kilns in Charlestown in Fife. I haven't done it yet. Maybe one day! All the best, Joe

Thank you Joe. I didn't know about the limekilns in Charlestown so I had a quick look. They are also very old. It would be an interesting project. I hope you get to go and take some photographs.

Have a lovely weekend. Best wishes Carol

I am sure I will get there one day, Carol. Charlestown is close to North Queensferry, from where you get great pics of the Forth Bridge.

Thank you very much Henri. I am pleased you like it as it is one of my favourite parts of Scotland.
The history of places we visit interests me, especially areas like this, which is steeped in history.
The Marquis of Stafford also had Moine House built as a safe stopping place for travellers and had a new road constructed to give safer passage through the area

It makes me laugh really that I think of Scotland as wild and rugged - and then I look at some of the amazing places you have visited. Even in Scotland I cannot imagine a team of men hammering nails into a bridge after each vehicle crosses it!!!!

A lot of these kilns along our coastline Carol. I too have driven along this Loch (quickly) but it was in very poor misty rain. Great series here. Well done.

Ecobird club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thank you very much Rosa. It is a beautiful area and I am pleased you liked the PiPs.
The house would have been home to the ferryman for many years. I imagine it was hard living but the views over Loch Eriboll and the surrounding area would have been worth it.

I am pleased you liked the link. I had not heard it before but was looking for a Quarrymen song to go with the picture and found it. The sound may not be great but it is worth it for the pictures. Someone has remastered it on a different link, but for me it then lost its authenticity. They could not have imagined then the future they would have!!!

Ecobird club has replied to Loose_Grip/Pete club
Even if the fence was a bit sturdier you are warned to be careful up there as the limestone and coal was unloaded straight into the shafts and these are barely enclosed and very deep so care needs to be taken when exploring! I will stick to solid ground and take photos from afar I think!!!

Very good pictures and 'pips' Carol.. with interesting write up too.. I have grubbed around lime kilns in Derbyshire.. // I think that's the first time I've seen and heard 'The quarrymen' - fascinating.. // I'm no expert but it looks like McCartney could be playing a right handed guitar re-strung 'upside down' which would be needed for a left handed player.. (before he got rich) !!
Now keep well - a ''HFF'' and a ''Good weekend'' to you - from Dj.
