Ein gotisches Meisterwerk - A Gothic masterpiece

Ein Blick in den östlichen Kreuzgang der Klosterruine Chorin in Richtung Klosterkirche. Es imponiert der schlichte, aber sehr ästhetishe gotische Baustil. Da es den Zisterziensern verboten war, auffälliges Schmuckwerk zu errichten, wurde viel Mühe in aufwändige Friese und Konsolen investiert. Sämtliche Kreuzgangkonsolen tragen unterschiedliche Motive, deren Deutung neben geistlichen Motiven auch vegetabile und stereometrische sowie Fabeltier-Motive aufweisen (entnommen aus dem Wikipedia-Artikel). Die beiden Konsolen rechts oben (siehe Notiz) zeigen wohl menschliche Fratzen.

A view from the eastern cloister of the Chorin Abbey ruins towards the abbey church. The simple but very aesthetic Gothic architecture is impressive. As the Cistercians were forbidden to erect conspicuous ornaments, much effort was put into elaborate friezes and consoles. Each of the cloister's consoles bears a different motif, the interpretation of which includes not only spiritual motifs but also vegetal, stereometric and mythical animal motifs (taken from the Wikipedia article). The two consoles at the top right (see note) probably show human grimaces.
