Auf (und in) diesem alten Baumstumpf wachsen mindestens vier verschiedene Pilzarten (Hutpilze und Konsolenpilze), die mit ihren Hyphen im Holz wachsen und je nach Pilzart die Zellulose oder das Lignin oder auch beides für den eigenen Stoffwechsel zersetzen, wobei das Holz seine Stabilität verliert, muffig riecht und brüchig und bröselig wird. Pilze sind also die Recycler des Waldes.

At least four different types of mushrooms (cap mushrooms and bracket fungi) grow on (and in) this old tree stump, which grow with their hyphae in the wood and, depending on the type of fungus, decompose the cellulose or the lignin or both for their own metabolism, whereby the wood loses its stability, smells musty and becomes brittle and crumbly. So mushrooms are the recyclers of the forest.
