Snails are animals that live in moist air. To protect themselves from dehydration, they have a layer of mucus that covers the body.
Since the mucus layer does not provide sufficient protection in hot and dry weather, the snail retreats into its shell and seals the opening with mucus, which solidifies into a fine membrane. The snail then falls into a state of dormancy in which its vital functions are greatly reduced. Often, snails in summer dormancy are not found on the ground, but on tree trunks or plant stems where the air is cooler than on the ground.
I found the Roman snail (Helix pomatia) in the photo "stuck" to a vineyard wall. By the way, it is the most common dextrorotatory shell variety (i.e.no snail king with left-turning shell).
