Occasionally, a rare Sorbus species occurs in the mixed forests of Central and Southern Europe (also in Germany), namely the servive tree (Sorbus terminalis). The leaves resemble maple leaves, with the difference that they often turn bright orange-red in autumn (see PiP). The fruits are small brown-red apple fruits. As the wild service tree has deep roots and can thus access deeper water supplies in the soil and also grows preferentially at somewhat higher temperatures (such as in Franconia), it is now cultivated in many areas of Germany as a "climate tree" in the hope that this tree species will survive the current climate change well. The wood of the service tree is a valuable wood for furniture making.
The picture was taken in a Franconian mixed oak forest. You can see a service tree with bright yellow leaves, just as tall as the surrounding oaks (about 12 high).
