Zitronenfalter nascht an Löwenzahnblüten - A common brimstone is nibbling on dandelion blossoms

Photographed is a male common brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) just sucking nectar from a dandelion flower. Common brimstones are unique in our animal world in several respects. Firstly, they have the highest life expectancy of all Central European butterflies, at 12 (!) months. And furthermore, as butterflies they overwinter freely in vegetation, even in ice and snow. With the help of substances that lower the freezing point of the body fluids to -20 degrees Celcius, it is possible for them to survive even harsh winters. Another peculiarity is that the butterflies fold up their wings immediately after landing, so that one practically never gets to see the upper sides of the wings.
In the picture a battered male, which obviously had to go through some adventures.
