Die roten Früchte vom Pfaffenhütchen (Euonymus europaeus) kommen nach Schneefall besonders gut zu Geltung. Eine Besonderheit dieses giftigen Strauchs: Die Art ist dreihäusig, d. h. neben Pflanzen mit zwittrigen Blüten kommen auch solche mit nur männlichen und solche mit nur weiblichen Blüten vor; bei letzteren sind die Pollensäcke taub. Euonymus europaeus kommt häufig an Waldrändern vor und wird auch gerne in Gärten angepflanzt. Oft werden aber ganze Sträucher von Raupen der Pfaffenhütchen-Gespinstmotte befallen, welche die Blätter fressen und die Pflanze mehr oder weniger schädigen.
