Upstream from Petite France, the Ill River flows through the Vauban Dam, a defensive structure built at the end of the 17th century.
At that time it was known as the Great Lock, but today it is used for sculpture exhibitions and as a viewing terrace overlooking the Ponts Couverts bridges and the Petite France district.
The main defensive function of the dam was to raise the level of the River Ill in the event of an attack, thus allowing the plains south of the city to be flooded and making them impassable for the enemy.
