Impressions of the onion market Bern
About the background of the Zibelemärit ; different theories exist. According to recent research the market was founded in the middle of the 19th century.
Other theories start the beginnings of the Zibelemärit in the 15th century. One of them says that the market goes back to the city fire of 1405; the market could be the thanks to the people of Fribourg, who after the great fire would have provided neighbourly help.
The other assumes that Freiburg would have obtained the right to hold a market due to the aid of weapons from 1474 to 1477 during the Burgundian Wars.
