The area consists of approximately 500 outlets, most thermal springs with alkaline, chloride-containing water or mud pots and at least 65 geysers, seven of which are currently active.
Most of the currently active geysers in Whakarewarewa are on a small scale, the Geyser Flat, on a common fault. They form a complex system of interacting geysers.
