Kerkyra (Corfu) is a city in Greece, located on the east coast of the island of Corfu.
The city's most notable structures are the fortresses of Palaio Frourio (12th-16th centuries) and Neo Frourio (17th century), which is why the city was often referred to as Kastropolis (fortress city) during the Middle Ages.
Neo Frourio ("New Fortress"), also known as the Sea Fortress of St. Mark was built between 1572 and 1645 by the Italian architect F. Vittelli on St. Mark's Hill, financed by the Venetian Republic, which then owned the island.
