Somerset Levels

Somerset Levels
Totney Drove looking East on a bright but cold winter's day, this is on the Northern edge of the160,000 acres (650 km2) levels, 32 sites of special Scientific interest 12 of which are Special Protection Areas as well as the oldest known timber trackway dating from around 3800 BC are all to be found in this part of the levels,

Droves are roads and Rhynes (Somerset Spelling) are watercourses

The note is of Brent Knoll at 449ft (137 M) it is one of the few points of higher ground on the levels and was an Island prior to the draining of the area.

I would encourage a large view !

Very nice comments Doug, thank you.
Droves are almost invariably straight, with junctions as crossroads or 90-degree corners.

Fine shot, Roger!
Has the landscape been restored to its natural state?

Thank you, large areas have been restored to original reed beds and bog, and the levels have been pushed to the forefront of climate change because of its capacity to store large amounts of carbon
