Standing Stones

Standing Stones
I am working my way though the archives, and intend to post the odd item from time to time, I have now reached 2019,
This is the Cleitir Stone Circle also called Callanish 8 which is just over the bridge to Great Bernera Island, Outer Hebrides. The waterway is Loch Rog,
An investigation in 2010 concluded that the stones form a solar observatory and the tallest stone is 9 ft high

Mikus, Smiley Derleth, Denis Croissant, Günter Diel and 29 other people have particularly liked this photo

Ein alter Steinkreis, wie so häufig in GB, Roser.
Gefällt mir sehr gut mit dem Gewässer und dem Grün.

I always enjoy looking at your archive shots when you post them Roger......so I'm looking forward to more.

This one is fascinating......the stone look amazing considering how long they've been there and there's something very spiritual about them. The fit into the surrounding landscape beautifully.

I supposed we'll never know for certain why they are there and what they were used for but for me that just adds to the charm.

A cracking shot sir!

Lovely comments Keith, thank you, these site do give you goose bumps.
The tallest stone is around 9ft tall and an investigation in 2010 concluded that the stones form a solar observatory believed to be from between 3000 BC and 2000 BC,
Great Bernera has many of these sites and more images will follow in due course

Another of your beautifully composed views of the landscape of Scotland Roger. The perspective is wonderful with the loch leading the eye towards the distant mountains, but not distracting from the focal point of the amazing standing stones. Thanks for the interesting notes.

Best regards, Doug

Hi Roger
I like this picture very much!
We must give these ancients a lot of credit for their understanding of the heavens, made without the mathematics we have today!
Best Wishes, HWW,, and stay safe!!

Thank you, Peter, It would appear these solar observatories for astronomical alignments were created to predict seasons or as some form of lunar calendar,
We visited another of these in Kilmartin Glen
