Kolufossar

Kolufossar
Víðidalsá river eroded a gorge (Kolugljúfur) into which a waterfall tumbles in 3 steps. Legend has it that the gorge was dug by a giantess called Kola.

I like Icelandic saga and also Nobel prize in literature in 1955, Independent People, by Halldór Laxness, which this amazing series of yours reminds me.

Thanks a lot, Adele! I just finished that book:-) Laxness wasn't very popular in Iceland in his time, they didn't like his irony and sarcasm and thought him a communist...

Yes I know, but the point of view of a foreigner like me can be very different, for several reasons …

Another awesome waterfall...............captured in lovely light and fantastic detail. Once again you've captured the movement and power of the water perfectly.

A stunning pair of PiPs too, especially the first one, which is my favourite of this little series.............outstanding work Gudrun..!! ⭐️

Thanks very much, Keith! On my winter trip to Iceland I had hoped for sights like this. This fall was easy of access as there is a bridge over the gorge.

So am I to guess that the tap water in Iceland is really really good? I imagine the power of the flows bringing great energy to the water one drinks.

Great photo.

Gudrun club has replied to raingirl club
Thanks a lot, Laura! Cold tap water in Iceland is absolutely clean and always tastes good!
The hot water from taps sometimes smells of rotten eggs because they use thermal water. But many tourists complained and now they often use heated spring water, especially in Reykjavík and the touristy places.

raingirl club has replied to Gudrun club
Oh wow. In Oregon here we have a water fountain (in Ashland) that smells of rotten eggs as it is full of "good for you" things. I think it's a mineral spring or some such thing. I had a small taste, but couldn't handle it. Fascinating that heating the Iceland water makes it better.
Gudrun club has replied to raingirl club
Iceland is a volcanic country so there are hot springs everywhere, but obviously they come with volcanic minerals;-) Most heating is run with such water.
The cold springs are free of the smelly stuff, often the water has percolated through layers of old basalt which works as a purifier.
So heating spring water needs more energy than just using already hot thermal water, but Iceland has plenty of green energy with quite a few geothermal power stations.

No trouble in Iceland- they built their schools in places with hot springs so there always were hot showers;-)
