Road to Þórsmörk

Road to Þórsmörk
Road (F)249 branches off from the ring road and runs between the river Markarfljót and the slopes of Eyjafjallajökull. There are numerous river and stream crossings and especially some of the glacial rivers are notoriously unpredictable. Most of the streams are constantly changing their course so no reliable fords can be marked. We saw several exhaust pipes and number plates which careless motorists had lost in crossings;-)

The mountain/ glacier in the background is Mýrdalsjökull with Katla volcano underneath.

Thank you so much, Keith! F-roads are not for small cars but experienced Icelandic drivers know their business and 4x4 buses with high clearance usually don't run into trouble.

Schönen Dank, Uwe! Die Straße ist hinter mir, sah aber teilweise auch nicht anders aus als das vor mir;-) Höhergelegte hochlandtaugliche 4x4 Busse schaffen das gut- im Gegensatz zu kleineren 4x4 PKWs.

Danke vielmals, Percy! Allerdings, slebst bei teilweise schlechtem Wetter! Diese Pisten kann man eigentlich nur organisiert genießen, wenn man nicht mit großem 4x4 auf die Fähre will oder kann.
