Giske Church

Giske Church

Originally the private chapel of the noble Giske family, the current church probably dates from the 14th century. The Giske family had ties to the Norwegian kings, one daughter married King Harald III. Hardråde who died in 1066 in the Battle of Stamford Bridge.
Later the marble church (the marble doesn't show under the whitewash) was used as a parish church.

Such a beautiful church and photo...........it seems the church is much older than it looks and I suspect that is because the original marble is whitewashed, which gives it a more modern look. I like the terracotta roof tiles and that beautiful shaped tree off to the right. I do wonder what the original marble walls look like!

The different perspective in the PiP is also beautiful..........I especially like that it gives us a better look at some of those amazing textured headstones.

Excellent work Gudrun

Thank you so much, Keith! The current church is Norman, the inside was changed several times later on. Sadly due to Covid restrictions it was closed. The marble came from the wider area, there is a quarry a bit further north! The headstones are often quite old, many 19th century and quite elaborate.

Danke vielmals, Uwe!

Many thanks, Gillian! The steep roof helps the snow slide down so the weight doesn't get too much.
