Telegraph Bay

Telegraph Bay
Telegraph Bay is arguably the most beautiful Bay on Alderney. There are caves at beach level but sadly the path down to the beach had been partly swept away by rockfall and was closed (see inset photos)

Alderney is the northernmost of the Channel islands, it's 8 km³ large and part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. It is only 15km from Cap de la Hague from which it is separated by a dangeous tidal current.
Alderney used to be rich in megalithic dolmens but 19th century fortifications and German occupation in WWII destroyed most of them. Because of its exposed situation Alderney was completely evacuated in WWII, the Nazis fortified it heavily and ran work and concentration camps there.

Herzlichen Dank, Maik! Was man auch nicht wiedergeben kann- hinter mir ist der Inselflughafen und das berüchtigte "Lager Sylt" (KZ), von dem man praktisch nichts mehr sieht...

Hallo Gudrun, bei dieser bemerkenswerten schönen und wilden Küste ist mir heute nun schon zweimal der Rechner ausgestiegen... Woran mag das wohl liegen?
Ist das etwa ein magischer Druiden-Finanz-Ort, oder so...??? ;-))

Schönen Dank, Udo! Ich glaube, die Druiden haben sich spätestens verkrümelt, als zu napoleonischen Zeiten die Engländer hier eine Festung nach der anderen bauten....Und heutzutage würden sie wohl die nur 15 km entfernte Wiederaufbereitungsanlage von La Hague fürchten. Ihre Offshore- Gelder können sie ja trotzdem auf Alderney liegen haben:-)

DAs rechte PiP ist ja nun definitiv etwas für Freitag. Gefallen mir alle drei sehr gut und erinnern mich stark an die französische Küste um Cherbourg herum.

Vielen Dank, Lutz! Ich überlege mir, ob ich das PiP eventuell am Freitag "freilasse";-)
Die Ähnlichleit mit der französischen Küste ist nicht zufällig, es ist ja nur ein Katzensprung und während der Eiszeit gab es noch eine Landbrücke.

Thanks, George! It does have meadows and fields and some wooded valleys but vegetation generally is less varied than on the other Channel Islands. The cliffs look similar on all islands.

Many thanks, Herb! We were lucky to catch a catamaran (Dielette, Guernsey, Alderney) as there were no regular ferry services at that time.
