DH9 [listed as Airco DH.9 - but post-1920 it was known as the de Havilland DH.9 ]
WW1 era bomber, beginning service with the RFC in November 1917 - initially, engine performance was unsatisfactory. Over 4,000 built and retired in 1937. Redesigned with a new & better engine in 1918 as the DH.9A.

R.E.8 ... initially had a bit of a poor reputation as difficult to fly with frequent engine problems - not quite dual control, but enough that the observer could make forced landing - frequently used for artillery observation [spotting] to correct the battery's aim. Also used for general reconnaissance.
