British artist Bridget Riley en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridget_Riley began producing black and white paintings like this that explore optical phenomena in the early 1960s. She never studied optics but creates her works through a combination of precise technical skill and intuition regarding what will evoke sensations of movement for the viewer. She became the focus of the Op art movement when her painting Current (1964) was used for the catalogue of the landmark show ‘The Responsive Eye’ at the Museum of Modern Art in New York
