The theme of Beauty was further elaborated by Socrates and Plato. The former, according to what we learn from Xenophon in his (whose veracity is now the subject of some doubt, given the author’s partisan stance), apparently wanted to legitimize artistic praxis on a conceptual level by identifying at least three aesthetic categories: Ideal Beauty, which represents nature by means of montage of the parts; Spiritual Beauty, which expressed the soul through the eyes (as in the sculptures of Praxiteles, who painted the eyes to make them look more realistic); and Useful, or Functional, Beauty
