Portland Street North - Leek detail
Portland Street North - Leek
| |
|
An odd looking house in Leek with some unusual terracotta work. I suspect that this was designed by Larner Sugden, of the local architectural firm of W. Sugden & Son.

Cauldon Cement Works
| |
|
The Lafarge cement plant at Cauldon in Staffordshire has a production capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum.
Leathers Smithy
| |
|
|
The brooding slopes of Tegg's Nose Country Park loom over the Leathers Smithy public house. In the foreground the waters of Ridgegate Reservoir form a familiar whirlpool before heading to the taps and showers of the good citizens of Macclesfield.
Great Crested Newts
| |
|
Seen at the Cheshire Wildlife Trust open day at Trentabank in Macclesfield Forest. Just seeing these beautiful creatures took me back to my childhood days trying to catch newts at the local marl pits.
The person promoting newt conservation was licensed to have the newts there as they are a protected species and even handling them without a licence could be an offence.

Local passenger train on the Tiefa coal railway in Liaoning Province arriving at Sanjing Mine on a cold winter's day.
Not amused ...........
| |
|
Queen Victoria was looking sartorially altered today on her plinth outside the Crown Court in Chester. I am sure she would not have been amused.
Another first
| |
|
It has been so warm and sunny here that the dragonflies are appearing much earlier than usual. Today I saw my first of the year which was this male Four-spotted Chaser (Libellula quadrimaculata). It took its first flight across the meadow and when it alighted on the grass I was able to shoot this close-up. A happy summer of dragonfly watching awaits. :-)
The first Green Hairstreak of the year
| |
|
I love to see this beautiful butterfly, Green Hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) and this year it is flying two weeks earlier than in 2006. Today I saw at least 15 at Newchurch Common, Cheshire.
Hellfire
| |
|
'Bollin Hellfire' - recently born bull calf from the Bollin Valley herd of Old English Longhorn Cattle. Cows from this herd are often seen grazing the Macclesfield Riverside Park.
Welcome
| |
|
It's always encouraging to be welcomed into the British countryside. Seen on a public footpath in Cheshire. Why do they think we might consider it to be anything other than private land?
Wardlow Quarry overview
| |
|
There is little activity to be seen in this section of the extensive Wardlow Quarry near to Caldon Low in Staffodrshire. This area rejoices in the name of the 'Weaver Hills' and is riddles with mines and quarrying activity.
Wardlow Quarry detail

The red/orange colouration of the limestone at Wardlow Quarry is quite evident in this detail.
