Coal empties
| |
|
'Kriegslok' 33-503 hurries towards Banovici with coal empties from the from Tuzla power station. The derelict and burned out house in the background is a reminder of the recent civil war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The weather conditions were not conducive to easy photography but snow and mist can give a quite a moody effect.
Broadstone Mill
| |
|
|
Broadstone Mill in Reddish was originally erected as a double mill for 260,000 mule spindles in 1903-7, only half of the structure has survived since cotton processing ended in 1959. It is remarkable that the window structure has seen so little alteration since then as the building is now in multiple industrial and commercial occupation.

Abandoned

The factory is silent with the workers laid off. In the corner of the erecting shop an old workhorse has slept for a long, long time.

The deep mine at Breza, Bosnia-Herzegovina, was opened in 1907 and the shaft is now 475 metres deep. Production is significantly lower than before the civil war at around 16,000 tons per month with a workforce 650 underground.
Kostolac 'B'
| |
|
The Kostolac 'B' thermal power plant in Serbia has a capacity of 640MW. It is supplied with brown coal from a number of opencast mines in the area. This view is taken across the worked-out area of the Klenovic mine which supplies the nearby Kostolac 'A' power station.

Viscose Factory
| |
|
|
This state owned Loznica viscose factory in Serbia was the largest employer of the city until the civil war reduced the output dramatically. Viscose was made from wood pulp and used in making synthetics including rayon. In 1992 the factory employed 12,000 people but production has been stopped for several years. There are hopes of a buyer who will restart production and initially employ around 2,000 people.

Oakwell Brickworks
Oakwell Brickworks
| |
|
The Hoffmann Kiln at the disused Oakwell Brickworks, Ilkeston, is a grade II listed structure. This has not afforded it any protection from the depredations of the weather and the local populace, and it is now in a sad and ruinous condition. I note that owners Corus have been attempting to have the site zoned for housing development and this will no doubt seal the future fate of the remaining structures. By then the listed kiln will probably have collapsed altogether.
