Peipiao

Having never previously seen a Chinese brick with a name in the frog, I was surprised to find this example amidst demolished housing in the centre of Beipiao, Liaoning Province, North-east China. The spelling is an alternative pinyin version of the town name.

The burning tip
| |
|
|
At the Sandaoling opencast coal mine there are a number of spoil tips, but only one for receiving the waste material from areas that have suffered spontaneous combustion of the coal and other carbonaceous material. Trains can arrive with the wagon contents well alight and this is quickly tipped adjacent to the track before the special plough wagon is brought up to push the material over the edge of the tip. Here JS 6430 is completing unloading of its train as the core of the bank continues to smoulder.

The sun is rapidly setting as JS 8076 pushes another spoil train onto the tips at the western end of the opencast coal mine at Sandaoling.

The sun has yet to rise even though it is 9.10am and JS 8053 is returning to the stabling point at Nanzhan having delivered empty wagons to the Erjing Mine on the Sandaoling Coal Railway. The snow is a bonus as it rarely falls in the deserts of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the far west of China. The Tian Shan (Celestial Mountains) range looms in the background.

Park Hill

The Park Hill estate with its "streets in the sky" was completed in 1961 and became the largest listed (Grade II*) structure in Europe in 1998. After years of decline the flats have been emptied and are currently undergoing the first stages of a massive £160milion refurbishement and conversion by Urban Splash which will be divided between social housing, private accommodation and commercial uses.

Albion Mill comprises the nearer and central buildings seen here, the oldest parts being erected in 1843. The nearer section still has the ghostly advertising for A W Hewetson who occupied the premises until the 1970s and were at one time the country's leading machine embroidery firm. Today the older premises stand empty and increasingly derelict.
The far building is London Road Mill which is currently occupied by East Cheshire Glass.
