Leaving the loop

70013 Oliver Cromwell with today's Scarborough Flyer gets the train started out of the loop at Chelford.
Overtaking

70013 Oliver Cromwell was motive power for today's Scarborough Flyer. It is seen with the train in the loop at Chelford whilst the Arriva service to Manchester overtakes.
1000 ASA this morning due to the gloom. :-(

Kalkofen Wolfspfad
| |
|
This limekiln at Hahn near Aachen was built in 1924 by the firm Schornstein und Drisch. The works was later operated by Gilles das Kalkwerk and this draw kiln produced 30 tons of lime per day. The kiln was restored in 1987 and is an important local historical monument.
Heading for the slag banks
| |
|
Slag ladles on the move at the Anshan steelworks in north-east China. At the time we were told that the works employed around 250,000 people! It is certainly one of, if not the, largest steelworks in the world.

This was billed as the "secret" depot in Shenyang and it was certainly hidden away amongst the back street of this district. It was very busy at the time of my visit with locomotives coming on and off shed all the time. The roster was roughly equal numbers of JS class 2-8-2 and QJ 2-10-2. When I passed by train in 2008 the whole area had been redeveloped and it was hard to tell that there had ever been a shed there. It is now a stabling point for inter city electric multiple units.
Goodbye Middleport
| |
|
Middleport is being demolished. This was Trubshawe Street and Bridgewater Street as the machines were well on with their work. The houses in the background facing onto Newcastle Street will be next to go.

E Winkle, Port Vale, Burslem

This one came as a surprise as I had not found any reference to this manufacturer in any of the trade directories. So far the only possible manufacturer of this firebrick that I have found is Elijah Winkle who was in business as a limeburner adjacent to the canal in Longport in 1896. No idea were the works might have been situated.
Thanks to Lance Bates at the Chimneypot Museum in Longton for letting me photograph this example from his collection.
Seiont Caernarvon

The Seiont brickworks was established c 1850 and was being operated by William Hayward in 1874. Bought by John Summers & Sons Ltd', Shotton it traded as the Castle Brick Co. Ltd until purchased by Hanson in 1972. This was the last brickworks in Caernarvon and finally closed in 2008. Found at Marchlyn Quarry.
Heading for Fuxun

QJ 1729 takes an eastbound load of empty coal wagons over the top of the Shenyang to Anshan line at Huanhe Junction near Sujiatun. The earlier numbered QJs generally had the smaller eight-wheeled tender as in this case.
The Odeon
| |
|
Former Odeon cinema on the corner of Trinity St and Foundry St, Hanley. This was formerly the site of the Grand Theatre which burned down in 1932. The replacement cinema opened as The Odeon in 1937 and ran until 1975. It was subsequently used as a warehouse during the 1980s, when it suffered minor fire damage and then lay derelict for many years. In 1999 was converted for use as licensed premises, and is currently trading under the name 'Revolution'. The buff terracotta faience survives, but the effect of the tower with the glazed top has been lost due to the tall building being constructed alongside.

Having arrived at the Yaojie system just before the diesels took over on the up from Haishiwan it was a case of seeing what photos could be obtained even if it was murky and misty. Here SY 0362 is on the empties up from from Haishiwan on a grim winter's afternoon.

Passing at Clogwyn

Two trains at Clogwyn station on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. On such a pleasant day the adjacent path was thronged with walkers, whilst on the Dinorwic side of the valley we met nobody all day!

True to form it was dark and dull for the Scarborough Flyer this morning. 6201 Princess Elizabeth was at the head today passing Holmes Chapel.
Almost a passenger train

There aren't many people who can say that they have seen a train of coaches ascending Hengshan bank on the Jixi Coal Railway. This particular working comprised two flat wagons loaded with concrete bridge sections, the 160 tonne Qiqihar based crane, and six coaches of its support train. SY 1369 headed the train banked by SY 1095 as they ran up the hill in fine style.
