The Bolton School of Art and Design on Hilden Street was originally built in 1901 as Pupil Teachers'Centre. The architects were Bradshaw and Gass of Bolton. The building incorporates some fine terracotta ornamentation including a pair of shield-bearing lions (lions sejeant) which bear great similarity to those supplied by Dennis of Ruabon on the Co-op drapery building near the town centre.

The Theatre

|
Berwick’s second cinema opened for business at the start of February 1928. As its name suggested, The Theatre, at the upper end of Hide Hill, was designed to allow both film and stage performances and it also incorporated a café. A sound system was installed in Summer 1929. The last film was shown here in January 1969. The building was subsequently a nightclub and a bingo hall before being redeveloped to house a combination of a restaurant, a shop, and residential accommodation.

Buttercup Dairy Company

|

Tiled entry to a former shop of the Buttercup Dairy Company Ltd which at its peak had over 400 shops across Scotland. The corporate style was designed by James Davidson Cairns, an Edinburgh based architect. The image depicted on the tiles was taken from a painting which hung in the Leith headquarters of the firm. The original painting was by Edinburgh artist Tom Curr.
The tiles were supplied by James Duncan Ltd who appear to have specified the designs which were then manufactured either by T. & R. Boote of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent or Maw & Co of Jackfield,
Shropshire. The Duncan company objectives included not only tile laying but also other building activities including plastering, slating, marble cutting and wood block flooring, together with fireplaces and kitchen ranges. Both the upper name panel and the pictorial panel are signed, with ‘J D Ltd’ below the picture and ‘J Duncan Ltd Glasgow’ in the upper panel.
