This kiln is high up on the fellside above the village of Gunnerside. The climb was steep and hot but the sight of this substantial kiln structure was reward enough for the effort.

The Brooklyn Works were constructed in the mid 19th century for the firm of Alfred Beckett, manufacturers of steel, saws and files. Alfred Beckett & Sons Ltd continued to manufacture at the Brooklyn Works until the mid-1960s using the 'Matchless' trademark. In 1967 Alfred Beckett & Sons was purchased by the Tempered Spring Company Ltd of Sheffield. The building stood empty for a period of time and was listed Grade II in November 1985 to protect it from demolition. Beipiao memories

A long lost scene from the now closed Beipiao mining railway. Spoil from the washery at Yijing was taken a short distance to be tipped on this siding, whence it was removed by a loading shovel. The train is about to cross over before reversing into the tip which was off to the right. The usual quota of Chines poles is visible.
