Limekiln archaeology
Early limekilns are scattered across the landscape of the Peak District and are easily spotted once you know what to look for. This is an intermittent earthen kiln in a small quarry at Burbage just outside Buxton which probably dates from the 18th century. The side of the kiln would be taken down to empty the contents and the remains here show the downhill side removed after the last time it was emptied.
