"We've Only Just Begun"

"We've Only Just Begun"
"We've Only Just Begun" was written by Roger Nichols (music) and Paul Williams (lyrics). It is frequently used as a wedding song. The song was originally recorded by Smokey Roberds, a friend of Nichols, under the name "Freddie Allen". It debuted in a wedding-themed television commercial for the Crocker National Bank in California in the winter of 1970 with Paul Williams on vocals. Richard Carpenter saw the commercial and the rest is magnificent history.

Back in April 2015 Helen and I went to Jonathan & Helen's {a different Helen :-)} wedding. I took a few candid shots and I was pleased with this one. Therefore, I am linking this to the original version by Paul Williams from his absolute classic 1971 album “Just An Old Fashioned Love Song”. I still have the vinyl copy :-))) Sorry, it's NOT for sale :-))

If you have an hour and a half to spare I would well recommend watching the film by Stephen Kessler ~ “Paul Williams Still Alive”. It has been on YouTube but disappears from time to time. No doubt, there are copyright issues. But, today, I have found it again on YouTube :-) www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6XxxQonbD8

And, not forgetting ♪ ♪ ♫ ~ The Carpenters version :-)

A lovely portrait. Didn't know the Paul Williams version of this, but prefer it to the Carpenters.

that's a pretty version of the song, but I also prefer The Carpenters better too, it's more romantic I think. and what a stunning portrait Rog!

Well, that sneaky little Paul Williams wrote a lot of good songs didn't he? I never knew this was his. I grew up (like many of us) with The Carpenter's version which I still love, along with so many of their songs.

This is such a lovely photo of "Helen." I hope she got a copy. A delightful (and informative) combination Roger.

Yes, for sure. Some of my faves are "Rainy Days and Mondays", “Waking Up Alone”, “Never Had It So Good”, “A Perfect Love”, "When I Was All Alone”.
And my all-time favourite is “That's Enough For Me” ….in my humble opinion one of the most beautiful songs ever written...........
"If I can make you cry
If I can fill your eyes with pleasure just by holding you
In the early hours of morning
When the day that lies ahead's not quite begun
Ah well, that's enough for me
I smile to think of you and me
You and I
And how our pleasure makes you cry"
Thank you very much, Karen and I appreciate you adding my photo to your faves :-)

The song is on Paul's album "Just An Old Fashioned Love Song". I have only found one version of this song by another artist and that appears to be a home recording by Jim Croce. Whether it was ever released on an album by Jim Croce I do not know :-(

What do you think? I think it's beautiful!

Hi Karen. Thank you for finding this gem! It is very, very, very good!!! Just been checking out Amazon UK and it looks as though "That's Enough For Me" is also the title of the album but it doesn't appear to be available here :-( Looking at the main Amazon site it does look to be available in the States but only on Vinyl and some very high prices are being asked! It also seems to suggest that Levon Helm, Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson from The Band were involved with the album. I cannot understand why it is not available on CD. Some more investigating is required methinks :-))

Such a beautiful photograph of 'Helen' A shot to be really proud of. The downcast eyes and pensive look give her an air of vulnerability. I have always loved the Carpenters, - Karen's voice was so beautiful and held so much feeling. I, too, was unaware that Paul Williams wrote the lyrics for this and I have never heard his version before. My husband always prefers singer/songwriters as they know how they want a song to be sung. Paul Williams certainly puts feeling into this song. Nice one Roger

Thanks so very much, Carol. And, I appreciate you adding my photo to your faves. Yes, I agree with your husband that singer/songwriters always know how they want a song to be sung. The Carpenters version is one of my all-time faves. I equally love Paul's original version. It comes from his album "Just An Old Fashioned Love Song" and I still play this regularly.....some 44 years after it was released :-)
