"Heart Like A Wheel"

23 Nov 2012 9 6 475
Added to ‘Soundtrack Weekend’ www.ipernity.com/group/362993 The Wheel in this shot is next to Startops End Reservoir. Seems logical to me, therefore, to link this with “Heart Like A Wheel” by Linda Ronstadt from her 1974 album of the same name. From Wikipedia - “Heart Like a Wheel is Linda Ronstadt's fifth solo album recording and the last of her studio projects for Capitol Records, released in late 1974. It is universally considered to be Ronstadt's all-time high-water-mark masterpiece recording and a pioneering blueprint of Country Rock. It spent 51 weeks on the Billboard album chart and has never been out of print in the now 38 years since its release.” Watch/Listen here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4edvNAtAwE I expect Linda to feature quite often in this Group :-)

"Till I Gain Control Again"

07 Oct 2006 10 10 702
Added to ‘Soundtrack Weekend’ www.ipernity.com/group/362993 “Like a lighthouse you must stand alone Landmark the sailor's journeys end No matter what sea I've have been sailing on I'll always roll this way again” “Les Hanoi Lighthouse rises from a reef on the south west side of the Island of Guernsey, and takes its name from the group of rocks - Les Hanois. The lighthouse marks the western end of the Channel Islands indicating the shoals and reefs to the west of Guernsey and providing a position fix for vessels entering the Channel Traffic Separation Scheme.” (From the Trinity House website) “Till I Gain Control Again” was written by Rodney Crowell and is one of my all-time fave songs. Just like the sun over the mountain top You know I'll always come again You know I love to spend my morning time Like sunlight dancing on your skin I've never gone so wrong as to telling lies to you What you've seen is what I've been There is nothing I could hide from you You see me better than I can Out on the road that lies before me now There are some turns where I will spin I only hope that you can hold me now Till I can gain control again Like a lighthouse you must stand alone Landmark the sailor's journeys end No matter what sea I've have been sailing on I'll always roll this way again Out on the road that lies before me now There are some turns where I will spin I only hope that you can hold me now Till I can gain control again I am familiar with Rodney’s original and versions by Emmylou Harris, Albert Lee, Waylon Jennings, Crystal Gayle, Van Morrison and Raul Malo but I was not familiar with this version by the Haley Sisters and I am now searching for their album :-) In my humble opinion songs don’t come much better than this :-) Watch/Listen here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwc9QQEPvqw

"Rock Me on the Water"

01 Jan 2008 19 19 641
Added to ‘Soundtrack Weekend’ www.ipernity.com/group/362993 In this very old Guernsey shot of 'Fort Grey' there are rocks and water. So that is good enough for me to link this to “Rock Me on the Water” written by Jackson Browne and performed here by Kathy Mattea. It probably sounds like everyone and every song are my faves :-))) But, this all-time classic song is one of my faves :-) And, Kathy has always been one of my faves :-) We have been so very fortunate to have seen Kathy live in concert on several occasions over the years :-))) Extracts from Wikipedia - “Kathleen Alice "Kathy" Mattea (born June 21, 1959, in South Charleston, West Virginia) is an American country music and bluegrass performer who often brings folk, Celtic and traditional country sounds to her music. Active since 1983 as a recording artist, she has recorded seventeen albums and has charted more than thirty singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts. This total includes the number one hits "Goin' Gone", "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses", "Come From the Heart" and "Burnin' Old Memories", as well as twelve additional Top Ten singles.” “In 1994, Kathy collaborated with Suzy Bogguss, Alison Krauss, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash to contribute "Teach Your Children" to the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Country produced by the Red Hot Organization. Also on that album, Kathy teamed up with Jackson Browne to contribute "Rock Me on the Water". Also through the '90s, she often collaborated with Scottish folksinger songwriter Dougie MacLean.” “Kathy has been heavily involved in HIV/AIDS-related charities, beginning in the early 1990s, and is often credited with being among the first to champion this cause among the country music community. She is the recipient of the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award, and the Harvard AIDS Institute Leadership Award for this work.” Fort Grey is now a Shipwreck Museum. In days gone by it was, reputedly, the haunt of witches but I haven't seen any here................yet :-) Watch/Listen here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gpuw_y5zu_k

"Hotel California"

16 Apr 2004 6 10 436
Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 The building on the left is not really Hotel California. But, it is for the purposes of Soundtrack Weekend :-))) I wish I didn’t have to look through so much foul language when reading YouTube comments but that is a gripe for another day!!!! Anyway, one comment includes the line “The ending of this song is simply one of the greatest sequences in rock history”. I would totally agree!! The interplay between Don Felder and Joe Walsh is breathtaking!! Add to this the most perfect vocal performance by Don Henley. “You can check out any time you like/But you can never leave" Listen/Watch here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dyw6LZpSOA p.s. it is actually ‘swissotel’ on the left of my shot :-) We stayed in 'Hotel Amsterdam' (in the middle of the shot) back in 2004.

"Late for the Sky"

04 Dec 2011 11 14 443
Where on earth ‘ave I been since 1974??? I must have been in hibernation not to be familiar with “Late for the Sky” by Jackson Browne :-)) I am very familiar with such classic Jackson Browne songs as “rock me on the water”, “these days”, “take it easy“, “fountain of sorrow”, “running on empty”, “the pretender”, "doctor my eyes”, “jamaica say you will”………………But, until I recently picked up “Jackson Browne Greatest Hits” for £3 (total bargain!) from Sainsbury’s supermarket I simply wasn’t familiar with “Late for the Sky” !! But now, I think I have worn out the replay button :-))) The next thing was how to get this breathtaking and all-time classic song on “Soundtrack Weekend”. So, here comes one of my obscure links :-) This shot was taken late-ish in the day and it is mostly of the sky. So that is good enough for moi :-))) Watch/Listen here- www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvBhFc0BSjI

“On A Bus To Aylesbury” aka “On A Bus To St Cloud”

09 Jul 2012 5 2 387
Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 On 9 July 2012 the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay came through Aylesbury. The SAMSUNG Bus was part of the convoy and the lady at the front of the bus is Beau. Beau’s mother saw my shot posted on that other site and contacted me saying “This is going to be one of the most memorable and favourite pictures of my daughter that I have seen whilst she is on the Relay convoy, thought she had gone Maori on everyone :) Lol. I am making a scrapbook for Beau whilst she is away on the convoy” I sent Beau’s mother a copy of this shot and some others taken on this memorable day :-)) “On A Bus To St Cloud” written by Gretchen Peters featured on Trisha Yearwood’s “Thinkin’ About You” album from 1995. It may sound like every song is my fave :-)) But, the first time I heard Trisha do this I was blown away and even more so when we saw Trisha ‘Live in Concert’ in Cambridge (UK). “On a bus to St. Cloud, Minnesota I thought I saw you there With the snow falling down around you Like a silent prayer” Watch/Listen here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=prJyb7W605c

"Boots of Spanish Leather"

05 Sep 2013 8 6 627
Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 To me the most obvious choice of a song here would have been “These Boots are Made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra. But, the YouTube clips I found were, quite honestly, out of bounds ‘cos of some of the most distasteful comments I have seen in a mighty long time!!! So, next on the list is “Boots of Spanish Leather“. I don’t know if the young ladies boots were from Spain but they will have to be for the purposes of Soundtrack Weekend :-))) “Boots of Spanish Leather” written by Bob Dylan is performed here by Nanci Griffith. Here I go again :-)) but, Nanci is one of my fave singers :-)) From Wikipedia - “Nanci Caroline Griffith (born July 6, 1953) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Born in Seguin, Texas, Nanci’s career has spanned a variety of musical genres, predominantly country, folk, and what she terms "folkabilly." Nanci won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1994 for her recording, Other Voices, Other Rooms. This album features Nanci covering the songs of artists who are her major influences. One of her better-known songs is "From a Distance," which was written and composed by Julie Gold, although Bette Midler's version achieved greater commercial success. Similarly, other artists have occasionally achieved greater success with Nanci’s songs than Nanci herself. For example, Kathy Mattea had a country music top five hit with a 1986 cover of Nanci’s "Love at the Five and Dime" and Suzy Bogguss had one of her largest hits with Griffith's and Tom Russell's "Outbound Plane". In 1994, Nanci teamed up with Jimmy Webb to contribute the song "If These Old Walls Could Speak" to the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Country produced by the Red Hot Organization. Nanci is a survivor of breast cancer which was diagnosed in 1996, and thyroid cancer in 1998.” Watch/Listen here- www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXMW2otJXMQ

"For A Dancer"

06 Oct 2013 5 6 564
Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 One of my more logical links this weekend. “For A Dancer” written and performed by Jackson Browne features on Jackson’s album “Late for the Sky” released in 1974. From the cover of Jackson’s Greatest Hits album - “Over the past three decades Rock and Roll Famer Jackson Browne has created and voiced many of the most literate and emotionally powerful compositions in popular music. Along the way he has touched the hearts and minds of countless fans worldwide and proved himself to be one of rock’s most enduring singer-songwriters”………………..No argument there!!! Lots of peoples were dancing to the superb entertainment at Hughenden’s 1940s Weekend :-)) I wish I could dance properly!! Helen and I did have dancing lessons a very long time ago and I remember that when I was with Dallas, the dancing instructor, we made a great couple and I would have given John Travolta a run for his money! Trouble was that when Dallas left me to my own devices I went downhill very fast :-))) Watch/Listen here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU1rZa8Ur_Q

"Before the Deluge"

17 Oct 2013 9 7 514
Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 “Let the music keep our spirits high Let the buildings keep our children dry Let creation reveal it's secrets by and by By and by-- When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky” “Before the Deluge” was written by Jackson Browne and features on his 1974 album “Late for the Sky” From Wikipedia - “Clyde Jackson Browne (born October 9, 1948) is an American singer-songwriter and musician who has sold over 18 million albums in the United States alone. Coming to prominence in the 1970s, Browne has written and recorded songs such as "These Days", "The Pretender", "Running on Empty", "Lawyers In Love", "Doctor My Eyes", "Take It Easy", "For a Rocker", and "Somebody's Baby". In 2004, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Music by Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.” I would normally only put in one link. But, I have found (in my humble opinion) three totally brilliant performances on YouTube……two from Jackson (Glastonbury and from the ‘Going Home’ DVD) and a performance from Christy Moore. www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8y45mAGJRA www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhQM41vBKvs www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQpoLUPSa1U

"Drive South"

22 Sep 2013 5 4 327
Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 Here comes a slightly vague/tenuous link, in need of an explanation I think, for Soundtrack Weekend :-)) I do believe this is a Ford Model B Roadster and I do know for sure I took the shot at the Kop Hill Climb in 2013 :-) The song 'Drive South' written by John Hiatt recorded by him on his 1988 album 'Slow Turning' includes the following lines - “Though love's not earned, Baby it's our turn We were always looking for true north With our heads in the clouds, just a little off course I left the motor running, now if you're feeling down and out Come on Baby drive south, with the one you love Come on Baby drive south, with the one you love Windows open on the rest of the world Holdin' hands, all the way to Dixieland” In 1992, Suzy Bogguss recorded the song for her album 'Voices in the Wind' her first release on Liberty Records. I do not know the lady in the car but I could imagine cruising down to Dixieland in a Ford Model B Roadster :-))) The following link is John & Suzy performing the song live way back in 1994 - www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvYno-l9TaI

"Forever in Blue Jeans"

29 Jul 2014 4 2 356
Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 Thanks to interest shown by Mick www.ipernity.com/home/631051 'Soundtrack Weekend' is up and running again :-)) *************************Why not come and join us???************************* I have been looking for a reason to upload this shot and it suddenly hit me.......... “the guy is wearing blue jeans and surely 'Forever in Blue Jeans' was a song”. Anyway, it wasn't too difficult for me to find out that Neil Diamond recorded this song way back in 1979 and Wikipedia confirmed this for me and said “"Forever in Blue Jeans" is a song by Neil Diamond which was co-written with his guitarist Richard Bennett. This up-tempo track, released as a single by Columbia in February 1979, was taken from the previous year's Neil Diamond album You Don't Bring Me Flowers. The song officially peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #2 on the Easy Listening chart in March, 1979. According to Cotton Incorporated "Neil Diamond might have been right when he named his 1979 #1 hit “Forever in Blue Jeans”: 81% of women are planning their next jeans purchase to be some shade of blue." The song has been used to promote the sale of blue jeans, most notably Will Ferrell, impersonating Neil Diamond singing, for The Gap. Coincidentally, Diamond himself did radio ads for H.I.S. brand jeans in the 1960s, more than a decade before he sang this song.” Incidentally, I have just noticed that the lady is also wearing blue jeans. Don't know why I didn't notice this 'til now and her wearing blue jeans as well is an amazing coincidence :-) Watch/Listen here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAWpkBurVno

Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 *************************Why not come and join us???************************* The Steve Miller Band classic “Fly Like An Eagle” includes the line “Time Keeps On Slipping Slipping Slipping Into The Future”. And, is it clever of me to link this to my 'Orb Watch' ???????? Originally, I was going to link this to "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" by Sandy Denny but, believe it or not, we 'wos' in a shop earlier today and they were actually playing "Fly Like An Eagle" :-))) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb9By-lODgk

Added to Soundtrack to Life www.ipernity.com/group/362993 *************************Why not come and join us??? :-)))************************* The obvious link here would, of course, be The Rolling Stones. However, I don't know why it is when I look at stuff on YouTube there are always inappropriate comments made by a minority!! Until I find a link that is suitable we'll have to go with Sheryl Crow singing this classic track! Gripe over!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK4_iabOdCI

Added to Soundtrack to Life www.ipernity.com/group/362993 Shall I let you into a little secret re the fox? ........................................................... :-) From Wikipedia - “Area Code 615 was the name of a Nashville country rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, taking their name from the telephone area code, which at the time covered all of Central and Eastern Tennessee. The band was made up of session musicians, recording only two albums before resuming normal session work. Their best known work was "Stone Fox Chase", which was used as the theme to the British Broadcasting Corporation's music programme The Old Grey Whistle Test.” Wayne Moss: guitar, bass, engineer, studio owner Charlie McCoy: harmonica Weldon Myrick: pedal steel guitar Bobby Thompson: banjo Buddy Spicher: fiddle David Briggs: piano Norbert Putnam: bass Mac Gayden: guitar Kenny Buttrey: drums, producer, occasional cross cut saw Elliot Mazer: producer, engineer, occasional Farfisa organ I did not know until I bought the cd reissue of the only two albums they released that Wayne Moss played the famous guitar riff on Roy Orbison's “Pretty Woman”and that Wayne, Charlie and Kenny were the rhythm section on Bob Dylan's “Blonde on Blonde” And, somewhere I have the 45 rpm of “Morning Glory” released by Mac Gayden.........a classic :-) It is also so sad to find out that Weldon Myrick (born 10 April 1938) passed away on 2 June 2014 following a stroke. Added to 'Soundtrack to Life' www.ipernity.com/group/362993 I have had in mind to use this piece of music but didn't think I would ever have a photo with somebody walking on a line or double yellow lines come to that :-)) It would have been obvious to use a Johnny Cash link but I do like this track by Rodney Crowell. And, Johnny Cash features in the video so that is okay :-)) I have most of Rodney's music including a couple of Vinyl LP's I recently picked up in a charity shop in High Wycombe :-) Of course there is another link here because Rodney was married to Rosanne Cash, Johnny's daughter from a previous marriage to Vivian Liberto Cash Distin. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjbqMy3g46E And, not forgetting :-) S is for… MARY SHELLEY Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.
