Théophile-Adolphe Manoury (1848-1909); French baritone.
From 1871/74 he studied at the Conservatoire National Paris with such famous teachers as Obin and Ismael. In 1874 he made his debut at the Grand-Opéra Paris as Alphonse in Donizetti’s “La favorita”. In 1877 he left Paris to make guest appearances. In the season 1878/79 and 1884/85 he appeared at the Marseille Opera and in 1881 at La Scala Milan (as Don Giovanni). In the season 1881/82 he was engaged in Brussels at the Théâtre de la Monnaie where he created the role of Hérode at the première of Massenet’s “Hérodiade”. In the following years he continued his guest appearances in Marseille, Bordeaux, Lyon and Toulouse. He then made a tour in the USA and was so successful that he was offered the directorship of the New York Conservatory. In 1893 he returned to France and performed for about ten years at various theaters. From 1903 until his death in 1909 he was a professor at the Conservatoire National Paris.

On the photo he is seen as Le comte de Nevers in Meyerbeer’s “Les Huguenots”.
