Marguerite Priola by Reutlinger

Marguerite Priola by Reutlinger
Marguerite Priola, born Marguerite-Marie-Sophie Polliart (1849-1876); French soprano who died at the early age of 27. She created various première-roles: Henriette in Auber's "Rêve d'amour" (1869), Madame Abeille in Von Flotow's "L'ombre" (1870), Maritana in Massenet's "Don César de Bazan" (1872), Silvia in Paladilhe’s “Le passant” (1872), Princess Elsbeth in Offenbach's "Fantasio" (1872) and Javotte in Delibes' "Le roi l'a dit" (1873).
She died very young after being seriously criticized for her interpretation of a certain rôle. The famous soprano Emma Calvé (1858-1942) wrote in her biography “My life” about this incident:
“One of the most charming and gifted of my friends, Marguerite Priola, whose lovely voice and unusual talent should have brought her a far different fate, commited suicide as a result of the attitude taken by the critics with regard to her creation of a certain rôle”.
As far as I know there is no proof that she commited suicide but it is supposed that Priola took the criticism of her last performance to heart so strongly and she suffered so greatly from the vicious criticism that she became severely physically ill and died from it.
