Potential SPAD well spotted, but no. All subsequent pictures showed the home signal was off. In this case it is only the crossing signal, so maybe a little late in clearing it...

The lead locomotive looks to be an unmodified version. In my opinion they looked far superior after the rebuilds,

As to the history of the houses, I don't know. Quite often in those days railway workers were given them so they could be close to their work.
