... oh, those famous stone/masonry rail viaducts of the British Isles !! ...
(I would say iconic, but can each one be an icon? The word is mutating nowadays and the dictionaries cannot keep up.)
(A catenary up there for electric locomotives too?)

... nice bucolic foreground ...

Hi Wally,

Thank you so much for your interest here. This viaduct, like most of the others, is built of 'engineering brick', ie the same size as housebricks, but much denser and stronger. In this case it carries the East Coast main line over the valley, and is an operational bottleneck being only two tracks (one each way). The rest of the route is four tracks.
I am happy that you enjoyed the horses!!

Thank you Steve,

Hard to believe that this was august!
The viaduct feeds into Welwyn north station, but has no easy place to look down on it like we did at Welland.
There is a public road accross the middle of the field, but the view from there is not so interesting.

Great shot and interesting thread. Welwyn. Hmmm. Do you mean the one in the Northern Home Counties ... or is there another one somewhere?
Best wishes, Andy

Thank you Andy,

As far as I know, there is only one Welwyn, just north of Hatfield. Just below, Füsun has given a lot of information about the viaduct. None the less, I am so pleased that you have enjoyed it.

Thanks Peter - and fusun for the great info!
I often went to Welwyn and surrounding area to see clients but always for evening appointments and so I never really saw what was there! I certainly never knew about this viaduct, hence my initial question. My loss! Best wishes, Andy

My dear Peter,

Another interesting and beautiful picture here!!
Welwyn Viaduct which was designed by William Cubitt and styled after a Roman aqueduct has an interesting story about Queen Victoria....
Also the great engineer and inventor William Cubitt life story is really worth read!

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful picture with us!

My Dear Füsun,

Thank you so much for your appreciation of the picture, and for your wonderful research into the building of the viaduct! Of course this style of viaduct is widely used in England, like at Ribblehead...
